Despite having shown a two-seat Acura Nexera Concept coupe at The Quail earlier this year, Acura is getting ready to give SUV shoppers more choices. Honda’s luxury brand has announced plans for three new SUVs, including an adventure-ready model, its largest SUV ever and a redesigned RDX that will bring hybrid technology to the Acura lineup.

The first of the new models is expected to arrive in early 2028. The next-generation RDX is also scheduled for 2028, while Acura’s new eight-passenger SUV is still in development. Acura has not yet released prices, detailed specifications or fuel-economy estimates for the new vehicles.

A New SUV for Outdoor Adventures

Acura’s upcoming “adventure-ready SUV” is designed for drivers who want a Honda Passport-derived vehicle that can handle outdoor activities without giving up the comfort and technology expected from a luxury brand.

The company says the model will combine adventure-focused capability with modern styling, premium features and everyday comfort. Acura has not yet shared details about its size, engine options, off-road equipment or expected price. Those details will help determine how it compares with other SUVs aimed at drivers who enjoy camping, road trips and outdoor recreation.

Room for Eight in Acura’s Biggest SUV Yet

Acura is also developing an eight-passenger SUV that will be larger than the current MDX, which seats up to seven people. The new model, to be called the Acura XL, according to Automotive News, is intended to meet demand for larger luxury SUVs, particularly among families who want extra seating and room to travel together. For shoppers who have found the MDX too small for their needs, the new vehicle could provide a reason to stay with Acura rather than look elsewhere. Pricing, cargo capacity and seating configurations have not been announced.

The RDX Goes Hybrid

One of the biggest changes coming to Acura is the introduction of hybrid technology in the next-generation RDX. The current RDX ceased production in April. The fourth-generation RDX, expected in 2028, will be the first Acura to use Honda’s two-motor hybrid-electric system. RDX has been one of the most popular Acura models, so it’s fitting that the upcoming fourth-generation RDX will be the first Acura to feature our two-motor hybrid-electric system,” said Mike Langel, assistant vice president of Acura National Sales earlier this year.

Acura has not released fuel-economy figures for the new RDX. But the company is also developing a V6 hybrid powertrain for its midsize vehicle lineup. Acura says the system will focus on sporty performance, stronger towing capability and improved efficiency.

Strong Sales Give Acura Room to Grow

Acura’s expanding comes as the brand reported a 4.4% increase in U.S. sales during the first nine months of 2026, compared with the same period last year. Sales of the MDX climbed more than 25%, while the ADX and Integra led their respective segments in retail sales, according to Acura. All three existing models are also scheduled to receive significant updates for the 2027 model year.

Acura plans to offer more choices, as well as a hybrid option in one of its key SUVs. The next big questions are how much the new vehicles will cost, what features they will offer and how they will compare with competing brands when they arrive.
