The 2027 Volkswagen Taos adds a Sport trim, but some of the most useful changes happen on the entry-level S. It gains full keyless access and a better-equipped infotainment system, while the lineup keeps a turbocharged engine and an eight-speed automatic.

VW lists a $26,500 starting MSRP for the front-wheel-drive S. Add the $1,525 destination charge and the starting figure is $28,025 before taxes, title, options and dealer charges. Here is what shoppers get for 2027.

A new Sport trim and more equipment for S

The 2027 Taos press kit places Sport between S and SE. Above those are SE Black Package and SEL. Sport gets black 18-inch wheels, black roof rails and spoiler, gloss-black mirror caps and gunmetal exterior accents. Inside, embossed black cloth seats and yellow stitching distinguish it, with privacy glass also included.

The new trim is primarily an appearance choice. VW does not list extra horsepower for Sport: the same 174-horsepower engine serves the lineup. The S gains Composition Media infotainment with satellite radio, voice control and six speakers instead of four, along with full KESSY keyless access and an enhanced rear seatbelt reminder.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Available Premium Speech and Premium Radio connected features require compatible equipment and service enrollment; do not assume every connected feature is included permanently in the purchase price.

174 horsepower, an eight-speed automatic and available AWD

Every 2027 Taos uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Both front-wheel-drive and 4Motion all-wheel-drive models use an eight-speed automatic. That engine output dates to the 2025 update, so it is not a new power increase for 2027.

EPA estimates are 27 mpg city, 35 highway and 30 combined with front-wheel drive. AWD models are rated at 25 city, 33 highway and 28 combined. VW says these ratings use regular unleaded fuel; actual mileage varies with driving and conditions.

The AWD choice changes more than traction. Front-drive models use a torsion-beam rear suspension, while AWD versions have a multilink rear setup. The 4Motion system can drive primarily the front wheels under light load and engage the rear wheels when needed.

Compact dimensions, with more cargo room in front-drive models

Taos is 175.9 inches long and 72.5 inches wide. Its wheelbase is 105.9 inches with front-wheel drive and 105.5 inches with AWD. Rear passengers get 37.9 inches of legroom, a useful figure to compare when a small SUV will regularly carry adults in back.

Cargo space also varies by drivetrain. Front-drive models have 27.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 65.9 with it folded. AWD models have 24.9 and 60.2 cubic feet, respectively. That is a meaningful difference for buyers who need to fit a stroller, luggage or bulky gear.

Standard IQ.DRIVE includes adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance, among other features. It remains a hands-on driver-assistance system requiring an attentive driver. A heated steering wheel is also standard; seating materials and other comfort features depend on trim.

2027 VW Taos pricing: $28,025 with destination

The S starts at $26,500 with front-wheel drive or $28,200 with AWD. With VW’s $1,525 destination fee, those totals become $28,025 and $29,725. Taxes, title, options and dealer charges are additional, and dealers set the final selling price.

That makes AWD a $1,700 step at the S trim’s listed prices. Buyers get the different rear suspension and added traction, while accepting lower EPA fuel economy and less cargo space. Sport pricing is not listed in the press kit, so check the current window sticker before deciding whether its appearance upgrades justify the extra cost.

For shoppers comparing the Taos with other small SUVs, the 2027 changes make the base S worth a closer look. The new Sport provides another styling option, but the drivetrain and cargo differences are likely to matter more in everyday ownership.
