The 2027 Toyota GR86 keeps its 228-hp boxer engine, but Toyota has changed how the car responds to the driver. Revised throttle calibration and a small mechanical change to the manual shifter lead this model-year update, alongside new camera hardware, cabin finishes and a Thunder gray paint option.
Toyota’s current U.S. pricing starts at $31,500 before its $1,295 delivery charge, bringing the entry price to $32,795 before taxes, options and dealer fees. Here is what changes for buyers comparing the updated GR86 with an earlier model.
Toyota worked on throttle response and the fifth-to-fourth shift
According to Toyota’s 2027 GR86 announcement, engineers revised the relationship between accelerator-pedal input and torque delivery to make the response more linear. The goal is easier control of the power already available, rather than a higher horsepower rating.
The manual gearbox also gets a physical change: Toyota widened the chamfer on the shifter interlock between fourth and fifth gears by approximately 0.02 inches. A chamfer is a beveled edge. Toyota says the adjustment improves the feel of the downshift from fifth to fourth. We have not driven the updated car, so that remains the manufacturer’s explanation rather than a road-test finding.
The driver-assistance cameras change, too. Toyota says it nearly doubled the stereo camera’s recognition range to improve detection of vehicles ahead while using cruise control. An added monocular camera helps detect nearby objects at intersections. These changes supplement the car’s standard active-safety equipment; they do not make it a hands-free driving system.
Powertrain and weight: the lightweight, rear-drive formula stays
Both the base GR86 and GR86 Premium use a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, rated at 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Peak torque arrives at 3,700 rpm. Buyers can choose a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, and a Torsen limited-slip rear differential is standard with either transmission.
Toyota lists the base manual car at 2,811 pounds and the automatic at 2,851 pounds. Its published 0–60 mph estimates are 6.1 seconds for the manual and 6.6 seconds for the automatic. Those figures describe Toyota’s testing, not our own acceleration results.
The available Performance Package continues on both grades, combining SACHS dampers with Brembo brakes. The brake hardware uses four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers. Buyers interested in repeated track use should compare the package’s equipment and price with the standard setup rather than treating the new throttle calibration as a substitute for braking or suspension upgrades.
New colors, Premium cabin choices and current prices
Thunder joins the exterior palette for 2027. Premium buyers also gain a Cockpit Red interior option with black Ultrasuede, red leather accents, red floor mats and red door accents. An all-black interior remains available, while switches, knobs and the shifter receive a cast iron black finish. The base car uses black GR-embossed fabric seats.

Although the June announcement left pricing for later, Toyota’s current 2027 model page lists the base GR86 at $31,500 and GR86 Premium at $34,400. Adding the published $1,295 delivery, processing and handling charge produces starting totals of $32,795 and $35,695, respectively. Transmission choices, packages, other options and regional delivery differences can change the final figure.
The 2027 changes make this an update worth considering if pedal response, manual shifting or the new cabin choices matter to you. They do not turn the GR86 into a more powerful car: the core appeal is still a relatively light coupe with rear-wheel drive and a manual-transmission option.
