Luxury car buyers have always wanted two contradictory things. They want to stand out just enough that strangers notice, but not so much that strangers ask questions. A Mercedes has traditionally solved this problem by looking expensive without looking desperate. Then the company spent the better part of the last five years building electric cars that resembled overinflated hotel slippers.
The 2027 CLA 350 4MATIC is the first sign Stuttgart has remembered that good design should turn heads for the right reasons. Gone is the bulbous jellybean aesthetic that saddled the EQE and EQS. In its place is a sleek four-door coupe that actually looks like someone in Stuttgart remembered Mercedes once built beautiful cars.
Mercedes-Benz CLA 350: One Efficient EV
Better yet, they remembered how to build an efficient one. The CLA 350 rides on Mercedes’ new 800-volt architecture with an 85.0-kWh battery pack feeding two electric motors. Combined output is 349 horsepower, good for a claimed 0-to-60 mph sprint of 4.8 seconds. EPA-estimated range lands at 312 miles, less than the rear-drive CLA 250+’s impressive 374 miles, but still enough to eliminate the weekly ritual of hunting charging stations like they’re endangered wildlife.
More impressive than the acceleration is the charging. At a suitable DC fast charger, Mercedes says the CLA can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 22 minutes, with a peak charging rate of 320 kW. Actual charging times depend on the battery temperature, state of charge and charging equipment. That’s about the amount of time it takes to order coffee, discover the pastry costs $11, and question every financial decision that led you there. The car also comes equipped with a native NACS charging port for access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, although charging speeds at many Superchargers will be limited by their 400-volt hardware.
Behind the Wheel of the Mercedes-Benz CLA 350
On the road, the CLA 350 is quick in the uniquely EV way that still feels like cheating. Press the accelerator and the scenery simply resigns. There’s no buildup, no theatrical downshift, no crescendo of induction noise. Just immediate velocity, like someone accidentally increased the playback speed on reality.
That said, it feels substantial in corners. Its strengths are all-wheel-drive traction and quick straight-line performance. It’s composed rather than playful, capable rather than mischievous.
Mercedes-Benz CLA 350: The Inside Story
Open its door and you’ll find that Mercedes has doubled down on the belief that every available surface should become a display. Depending on trim, the dashboard can be dominated by the optional Superscreen stretching across nearly the entire width of the cabin, running the company’s new MB.OS software and latest MBUX interface. It is visually spectacular in the same way Times Square is visually spectacular. Whether every function truly benefits from living behind another layer of glass remains open to debate.
The cabin materials largely justify the badge. Ambient lighting continues its campaign to recreate a high-end nightclub, while the seats strike an agreeable balance between support and comfort. Rear-seat accommodations remain the unavoidable compromise. The CLA is still a compact sedan wearing a coupe roofline, and no amount of German engineering has yet repealed geometry. You might jokingly read CLA as Compressed Little Automobile.
How Much You’ll Pay
The U.S. starting MSRP is $50,500 for the CLA 350 4MATIC, $2,550 more than the rear-drive CLA 250+. Destination charges, options, taxes and fees are additional. That’s a surprisingly modest premium for an additional 81 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and a 1.8-second improvement to 60 mph.
The Upshot
The significance of the CLA 350 extends beyond its numbers. Mercedes-Benz desperately needed an electric car that feels like a Mercedes first and an EV second. The early EQ models often seemed designed by committees negotiating through legal counsel. The CLA has personality. It has proportion. Most importantly, it has restraint.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz CLA 350 4MATIC won’t make enthusiasts abandon V-8s or convince every skeptic that batteries are the future. But it doesn’t need to. It simply needs to prove that an electric Mercedes can be desirable for reasons beyond its charging speed. For the first time in a while, that’s a promise the three-pointed star actually keeps.
