A recall of 325,588 Honda Odyssey for faulty backup displays.

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Odyssey vehicles. Water may enter into the rearview camera, which can cause the rearview camera image to fail to display when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”

Affected VINs should be searchable now at the NHTSA website.

Here is the relevant information from the NHTSA Recall notice:

NHTSA ID Number: 26V423

Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)

Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION

Potential Number of Units Affected: 325,588

Estimated percentage with defect: 0.8%

Descriptive Information

The recall population was identified based on manufacturing records and includes: (1) vehicles previously recalled under NHTSA Campaign No. 20V-438, and (2) 2018 model year vehicles equipped with Magna rearview cameras that were previously addressed through a Product Update (PUD) Campaign for the same condition. Both the previous recall and the PUD remedy used redesigned Magna rearview cameras, which will be replaced by Sony rearview cameras for this remedy. The production range encompasses all vehicles that may have been manufactured with the affected rearview camera and, therefore, could experience the condition.

Description of defect or noncompliance:

Water can enter the rearview camera assembly and cause the printed circuit board (PCB) to corrode. As a result, the rearview camera image can fail to display when the vehicle is in the reverse gear.

Description of the safety risk, including crash, fire, death, injury:

If the rearview camera image fails to display when the vehicle is in the reverse gear, rearward visibility is reduced, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Description of the cause:

The defect was caused by two contributing factors. First, the specification for the rearview camera housing boss hole was inadequate for the mounting screw. Second, due to variations in the positioning of the housing on the assembly jig, the mounting screw is susceptible to being misaligned during assembly. As a result, the stress generated during screw fastening exceeded the material strength of the boss, causing it to crack. Through environmental exposure (thermal expansion/freezing of trapped water), these cracks can expand, allowing water to penetrate the interior of the assembly.

Identification of any warning that can occur:

None stated.
