There are vehicles people are passionate about owning. They dream of them. Then there’s the 2026 Honda CR-V. It’s a vehicle purchased after spending six weekends comparing spreadsheets and concluding that passion is expensive. The 2026 Honda CR-V isn’t exciting. It isn’t stylish. It isn’t adventurous. It is, however, aggressively competent, which turns out to be exactly what millions of Americans want.

Honda’s updates for 2026 are mostly digital. Every CR-V now gets a larger 9-inch touchscreen, standard wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless phone charging. The EX-L adds a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, while All-wheel-drive models receive revised traction-control programming for improved low-speed grip. New 18-inch wheel designs round out the changes.

WHICH HONDA CR-V IS THE BEST VALUE

While the CR-V Hybrid, which we review separately, is the choice of most CR-V buyers, but it may be the wrong one.

Consider this. The Hybrid’s combined EPA fuel economy rating is 10 mpg better with front-wheel drive and 8 mpg better with all-wheel drive. That said, the Hybrid starts at $37,025 including destination charge, while the non-hybrid model starts at $32,315 including destination charge. Now, factor in the EPA’s annual fuel cost, and the math reveals that the hybrid may not be the better value.

Sure, the CR-V Hybrid will save you $550 in annual costs with front-wheel drive and $450 with all-wheel drive. But divide that by the hybrid’s higher MSRP and you’ll find that it takes 8.5 years for the fuel savings to cover the difference in sticker price on the front-wheel-drive model, and nearly 10.5 years with all-wheel drive.

You might think that’s justified, since the hybrid delivers more power. But its 204-horsepower rating isn’t significantly higher than the 190 horsepower the base model offers. Given that, we would choose the base model, as overall cost, including fuel, is lower.

HOW THE HONDA CR-V PERFORMS

Put your foot down and the engine responds with the same emotional response as shopping for a new dishwasher. All CR-Vs come with a continuously variable transmission that faithfully converts every attempt at acceleration into a droning soundtrack that suggests your vacuum cleaner is trying to escape. Yet somehow the CR-V works.

That’s because it remains one of the few compact SUVs that appear to have been tuned by people who actually enjoy driving. Turn the wheel and the front end responds without the vague hesitation common to vehicles designed primarily around cupholder capacity. Body motions are neatly controlled, steering delivers a surprising amount of feedback, and the CR-V tackles corners with far more enthusiasm than a family hauler carrying soccer gear has any right to.

Honda also deserves credit for building a CVT that doesn’t behave like it’s constantly rethinking its decisions. Throttle response is prompt, acceleration is respectable, and the powertrain generally goes about its business with an impressive level of refinement. No one is going to mistake the CR-V for a sports car, but it’s refreshingly free of the numb, disconnected driving experience that has become an industry standard.

THE INSIDE STORY

Honda continues its radical commitment to common sense. Climate controls are still controlled by actual physical controls. Imagine that. In a world where some automakers require three touchscreen menus and a software update to adjust cabin temperature, Honda remains stubbornly attached to the notion that drivers have hands.

Rear-seat passengers enjoy enough room to stretch out, complain about Wi-Fi speeds while plugged into one of two USB-C ports and ask if you’re there yet. And the 39-cubic-foot cargo space is suitably enormous. You could fit a week’s groceries, a Golden Retriever, a mountain bike, and most of your unfulfilled ambitions.

THE UPSHOT

The CR-V knows exactly what it is: transportation for adults who have accepted reality. And reality, it turns out, is pretty comfortable.

The 2026 Honda CR-V won’t make your pulse race. It won’t inspire envy. Nobody will ask for a selfie with it. But thirty years from now, when archaeologists excavate the remains of a suburban cul-de-sac, odds are they’ll find several CR-Vs still running, patiently waiting for their owners to finish shopping at Costco.
