Honda has apparently realized that even people who enjoy throwing a 315-horsepower Civic through corners occasionally get cold. So, for 2027, the Honda Civic Type R gets heated seats. Yes, heated seats. It may be the most practical upgrade in the 30-year history of the Type R nameplate, or at least the one most appreciated on a frigid January morning.

Fortunately, Honda hasn’t forgotten what the Type R is supposed to do. The updated 2027 model gets a more aggressive front fascia, improved engine cooling, revised suspension tuning, sharper brake-pedal response and a quicker Rev Match system. It arrives at dealers this month with a $48,695 MSRP.

More Air, More Attitude

The new front end isn’t just another exercise in making it look angrier. Honda says the larger grille opening and deeper front splitter improve airflow, reduce turbulence and increase downforce. Better cooling becomes particularly important when the Type R is being driven hard on a track.

Honda has also recalibrated the suspension in +R mode. The changes are intended to improve road-following performance, reduce bouncing and lessen impact harshness while cornering. Hmmm. Usually, when engineers say they’ve improved a performance car’s suspension, someone eventually tells you the ride is now so firm that your fillings have developed their own zip codes.

Honda says this one is supposed to improve both contact feel and composure. The brake pedal has also been revised with a new yoke spring to reduce play in the linkage, creating what Honda describes as a more direct feel. The Rev Match system gets quicker engine response during downshifts.

For a car sold primarily on the pleasure of driving it, these aren’t trivial changes.

The Good Stuff Remains

Under the hood is the familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged K20C four-cylinder producing 315 horsepower. That makes the Type R the most powerful Honda production vehicle ever sold in America. And Honda continues to insist on the old-fashioned arrangement: six speeds, three pedals and the expectation that the person behind the wheel actually knows what to do with them. There is no automatic transmission option. In an era when computers increasingly volunteer to do everything except fill out your tax return, the Type R remains defiantly analog in this respect.

Now About Those Seats

Yup. They’re now heated. (Photo courtesy of Honda)

The 2027 Type R’s front sport seats are heated for the first time. They get three-level controls, a revised perforation pattern and the same red, high-friction upholstery intended to keep occupants from sliding around during high-G cornering.Honda has also added Ultrasuede to the upper instrument panel and front doors, along with revised trim, darker finishes and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. So now, you can now attack a racetrack while sitting on a warm seat.

The technology department gets an upgrade, too. Google built-in, Google Gemini and Alexa built-in are standard, along with two additional USB-C ports.

The Upshot

Three decades after the Civic Type R’s debut, Honda is celebrating the occasion by making the car sharper where enthusiasts care about sharpness and more comfortable where everybody else cares about comfort.

That’s the right formula. The 2027 Civic Type R needs to remain engaging, usable and sufficiently unreasonable to remind you why somebody would buy a Civic that costs nearly $50,000.

And now, when that person drives home after a cold track day, at least their backside will be warm. Progress comes in mysterious forms.
